CHAPTER SIX
Mr. Shadows
10/26/1984
Trent was only outside because his mom told him to get some exercise. She complained that he spent too much time drawing his comics. She liked it when he played and ran. She told him that a boyâs nature was to run and climb treesâto explore his surroundings.
So he went outside. He knew his dog would want to play. He found the dog in the back yard. Rufus stared at him, so he picked up a stick.
âGo get it, boy!â he said, throwing a stick.
Rufus ran after it. The dog was a Jack Russel Terrier, a gift from a neighbor down the street some years back, was always ready to play with him. Recently, Trent drew a comic where Rufus was Rufix, and he could talk. It was an eleven-page adventure where at the end Rufus killed the evil Daddo Buttface; it was funny. He would have to pull it from its hiding place tonight and read it.
Freddy Pittman was his friend too but he wasnât sure if Freddy was his best friend. Freddy lived down the block. The boys had a disagreement about Jose Cruz being the best player on the Astros. Freddy thought it was Enos Campbell, but Trent knew Jose Cruz was the best player.
âCampbell had 310 bating average and eight homers this season!â
âBut Cruz had a 312 bating average and had twelve homers!â
âYouâre so stupid, Trent!â Freddy said.
Loose fingers curled up into fists. He didnât like being called stupid, his dad called him that almost everyday. Both boys were the same age and same size, but Freddy wasnât much of a fighter, and Trent knew it. He punched Freddy in his stupid face. Freddy cried a little and walked off and went home. That was four days ago, and he didnât know when Freddy would stop being mad.
The dog trotted back with the stick. He took the stick from Rufusâs mouth and threw it again. The dog ran after it again, and it made him smile. Rufus was happy.
What Trent really wanted to do was work on what he found. The other day he was on his bike and came across an old radio and small black and white TV someone threw out. He put the TV on this skate board and tied the other end to the his bike with a rope he kept wrapped under the seat. He held onto the radio by its handle, and was able to take both home. Both broken devices went into the garage. Although his dad was an asshole, Trent knew that he wouldnât mind if Trent brought home a TV and a radio, especially if he could repair them. His dad had seen them but hadnât said anything yet. Trent knew he would not be allowed repair them himself, he wasnât allow him to touch Dadâs tools.
If he was talking to Freddy, heâd take them to his house. Freddyâs dad let them use the tools; he was a good dad. He hoped by just showing up with the TV and radio that his dad would let him try to repair them.
